I’m Derek Lindsey, and Yes, I Do Judge Your Bookshelf Arrangement

CEO and Founder of “WhatmyDesign”

I’m Derek Lindsey, the guy behind WhatmyDesign. Fair warning: I notice things. A shelf that’s slightly off-balance, a lamp doing all the work three light sources should be sharing, a couch angled two degrees away from where it actually wants to sit. That noticing is basically the whole blog.

How This Started

I moved into my first real apartment a few years back and spent an embarrassing number of weekends trying to make it feel like somewhere I actually wanted to be, instead of somewhere I was just sleeping. I bought the wrong size rug twice. I hung a mirror in a spot that reflected nothing but a blank wall. Eventually I started writing down what I’d gotten wrong so I’d stop repeating it, and that list turned into the first posts on this site.

Why Home Decor Specifically

Most decor advice online repeats the same handful of phrases that sound useful and aren’t. “Add a statement piece.” “Layer your textures.” None of that tells you what to actually do. I got into this because I kept seeing the gap between advice like that and the small, specific fixes that actually change how a room feels. This blog lives in that gap.

What I Bring to This

I spent a few years doing floor merchandising and sales at a furniture retailer, resetting the same showroom layouts over and over to see which arrangements made people stop and look. That job taught me more about proportion, spacing, and how a room reads at a glance than I expected a retail job to teach anyone. Since then I’ve furnished two apartments from scratch, on real budgets, with real returns and real regrets along the way.

What You Won’t Get From Me

  • A recommendation for something I haven’t actually used or seen set up in person
  • A “just as good” dupe claim without a real side-by-side to back it up
  • Stock photos passed off as my own space
  • A push to buy something before figuring out what’s actually wrong with the room

I’d rather post less often and mean every word of it.

A Few Random Facts

I keep every framed print in my place slightly crooked on purpose, because perfectly straight always looks staged in photos. I’ve moved four times in five years and hung the same three prints in four completely different arrangements. I own more candles than I light. And the first shelf I ever installed myself is still up, uneven bracket and all, because taking it down would feel like admitting I was wrong.

How I Keep This Honest

Every post here gets checked for accuracy before it goes live, and I go back through older ones regularly to fix anything that’s gone stale, a discontinued product, a price that’s changed, advice that stopped holding up. If something earns me a commission or a brand sent it to me to try, I say so plainly, not buried at the bottom in fine print. You’re trusting a stranger’s take on your actual home. That’s not something I take lightly.
